J C Scatter J C Scatter (real name James Cosgrove) was originally from Gateshead and a popular singer and humourist. He’s believed to have made the first ever recording of the Blaydon Races in 1909. His stage act included dressing as a female fruit seller, singing The Orange Lass, as he juggled with oranges.

Pete Scott (photograph by Charles Holley) Pete Scott was born in Walker, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He started out singing in folk clubs and has gone on to perform both nationally and internationally. Pete has released three solo albums plus his recent homage to Joe Wilson, The Day Of Life. Pete combines his writing and performing with a successful career as a freelance music teacher. He’s worked in many diverse environments, including a two and a half year stint as resident musician in a high security prison.

Billy Oliver’s Ramble

Dave Stewart Dave Stewart was born in Sunderland and has played in various bands, including Stewart and Harrison, Longdancer, the Tourists, the Eurhythmics and the Spiritual Cowboys. He’s also collaborated with many other artists, notably Bob Dylan, Lou Reed, Tom Petty, Bryan Ferry, Sinead O’Connor, U2 and Natalie Imbruglia.

Sting Sting played in the Newcastle jazz group Last Exit before forming the Police with Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers. After the Police split, he found international fame as a solo artist, but still finds time to work with the Rainforest Foundation and Amnesty International.

Ian Storey Ian Storey (tenor) was born and raised in Chilton, County Durham. He’s performed all over Europe, as well as in the UK with Scottish Opera, Welsh National Opera, Royal Opera Covent Garden and Glyndebourne. His rôles include Pinkerton in Madame Butterfly, Don José in Carmen, Cavaradossi in Tosca, Jenik in The Bartered Bride, Rodolfo in La Bohème and Calaf in Turandot.

Ray Stubbs Ray Stubbs plays various instruments including guitar, piano and harmonica. In 1971, he formed an acoustic blues trio called Pigmeat, along with Sammy Johnson and Jim Murray. The band started to perform folk dates, but quickly graduated to the college circuit and played support to several big names, including the Barbara Dixon Band and Vinegar Joe. After Pigmeat split, Ray put together the ultimate one man-band kit and gigged all over Europe. As well as solo dates, Ray formed the R&B All Stars, who have performed to great acclaim at numerous prestigious festivals and concerts. Ray also has an alternative career as a successful TV actor.

Brian Watson Brian Watson grew up in Prudhoe, County Durham in the 1930s. In 1967, he became resident at the Prudhoe Folk Club at the West Wylam Inn. In 1973, he started a singaround club with Geordie Hunter at the Dr Syntax pub, which ran for 25 years, although with a few changes of venue. He usually sings unaccompanied.

Denis Weatherley Denis Weatherley (bass-baritone) was born in Ryton in 1912. He took a science degreee at Armstrong College, Newcastle and began a career in teaching. He was a member of the BBC singers, sang operatic rôles and presented radio programmes, as well as delighting audiences with his renditions of North East songs.

Denise Welch Denise Welch was born in Ebchester, County Durham. She’s appeared often on TV, perhaps most famously as Natalie Barnes in Coronation Street. In 1995, her double-A side You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me/Cry Me a River spent 3 weeks in the UK singles chart.

Hev Ye Seen Wor Jimmy?

Kevin Whately Kevin Whately found TV fame playing the part of Neville the joiner in Auf Wiedersehen, Pet and has since had leading roles in many dramas, including Peak Practice, Pure Wickedness and The Broker’s Man. He appeared in the Oscar-winning film The English Patient, but is possibly best known for his portrayal as Sergeant Robbie Lewis in Inspector Morse.

Geoff Wonfor Geoff Wonfor is an internationally famous TV director. He’s worked The Tube, the Beatles Anthology, Eurythmics Live and numerous rock and pop videos.
